Who we are ?
“Interstice – Fajawat” is a grassroots initiative launched in September 2023 with the primary intention of informing about the political situation in Syria today. In particular, this initiative was launched to shed light on the popular and democratic protest movement launched a month earlier in the governorate of Suwayda, in southern Syria. The members of Interstice-Fajawat come from different cultural backgrounds, but share the same philosophical, social and political values, as well as the same aspirations for radical social transformation from below.
Our values
We’re internationalists, but that doesn’t mean we give credence to borders and nation-states: we’re not an alliance of nationalisms, but rather a transnational, even anti-national project. We believe in a society based on a communalist and confederal system, in which popular autonomy is not synonymous with separatism or national independence.
We are anti-colonial, anti-authoritarian and anti-imperialist. This means that we believe in the freedom of peoples to self-determination, and in the need to make the exercise of political power strictly equitable, just and horizontal. In this sense, we are part of the socialist, libertarian communist and anarchist currents, which for us are not contradictory as long as they are anti-authoritarian.
We’re non-sectarian, but that doesn’t mean we’re against religions and beliefs. For us, religion is not a public and political affair, but a private and individual one. We refuse to base a project for society on religious or sectarian identities, and believe in the need for a non-theocratic, secular system.
We are anti-capitalists, because we believe that a system based on growth and profit is contrary to nature and necessarily leads to the destruction of life, as well as being profoundly unjust and individualistic. We believe in a new social ecology based on the unconditional preservation of our ecosystem, better use of natural resources and the abolition of all forms of human exploitation.
We are feminists and anti-racists, and consider all sexual and gender identities to be legitimate and unquestionable, as no morality or ethic can be invoked to oppress everyone’s individual choices and desires. We stand for the freedom and unconditional protection of all sexual, cultural, religious, racial and gender minorities.
We are revolutionary, because we do not believe in reform through the current governmental, elective and representative bodies, which are subject to the almost exclusive power of opportunistic political elites serving private economic interests.
Finally, we are radical, because we are interested in the root causes of social problems, and not in the temporary or partial cure of their symptoms.
Our objectives
Our aim is to create international links between all activists and political groups who share our values, with a view to building a common cross-border force capable of undermining the current political, economic and social system, and bringing about its profound transformation. We want to see the emergence of an internationalist bloc capable of defeating the political logic of states and putting an end to their domination of our lives. We want to be able to build up a serious counterpower in the face of imperialism of all kinds, which leads to war and the mass murder of civilian populations.
And most of all, we want to change the world 😉
